Shane Hawley is currently employed as Commander with the Edmonds Police Department in Washington State, where he has served for the past 24 years.
Shane has served in several specialty units throughout his career. He has worked as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, spent 10+ years in the K9 Unit, handling two different patrol (tracking) dogs and in Detectives. During his time in the Detective Unit, he worked all manner of cases, from fraud to attempted murders, and everything in between. He was promoted to the position of Corporal during that time, serving as a supervisor in Patrol, for the K9 Unit and also as the department’s Detective Corporal. He was promoted to the position of Sergeant and assigned an administrative position. As the department’s Administrative Sergeant, he supervised the non-commissioned staff and was in charge of police records, public disclosure, property and evidence functions as well as the department’s Public Information Officer (PIO).
In March of 2023, he was promoted to the position of Commander, supervising the department’s administrative staff and the detective unit.
Shane is the coordinator of the departments Field Training Program. During his time in this position, he has revamped the agency’s field training manual and currently supervises all field training functions within the department. The department currently has 20+ field training officers. He is responsible for overseeing the scheduling and training of all new officers. He also performs yearly refresher training for his agencies field training officers, helping them maintain proficiency in training others. The Edmonds Police Department supports the exclusive use of the San Jose Model of field training and uses it as the foundation of their new hire training.
Shane has been a member of NAFTO and spent several years at the Treasurer for the Washington Chapter of NAFTO.
Shane is a certified instructor by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC). He is also certified by CJTC as an instructor for the Field Training Officer Academy, a 40-hour class.
