David Harris & Associates Just Completed a Basic FTO Class in Kalama, Washington!

Basic FTO Class near me - Kalama, WA

We graduated another 21 new FTOs who will return to their respective agencies with a new understanding of how to train their new employees with a focus on Training Towards Success.

We had Corrections Officers, Financial Officers, and Intake Officers, as well as police and deputies, in attendance.

One of the questions many expressed was on how to “override” a student correctly. (Change the direction of the performance of their student.) One of our courses deals with just that—Overriding a Student Officer’s Decisions.

In that course, we discuss the Learning Rule, which focuses on the performance of the student, and the Practical Rule where the focus is on the event. In the first, as long as the student is working through the situation and the situation is not out of control, let the student continue with their efforts. In the second, if the situation is beginning to go out of control, then the rule states the FTO must step in and override.

Many of the students felt much better about when—and more importantly how—to step in and correct the decisions and/or performance of their students. When asked their thoughts after completion of the course, here is what some of them had to say:

  • Great class! Opened my eyes to the SEGs and how to properly apply them. Thank you!”
  • “I should have taken this class years ago! Loved the Adult Learning Class.”
  • “Lots of real-world examples helped me tie in the lessons! Great class!”
  • “Not only a great class, but you have a great knowledge of the material presented!”
  • “You helped me enjoy the class material with vivid stories and examples of topics presented.”
