News from Union Gap, Washington

Experience ranged from 5 to 20+ years of law enforcement!

Students taking their test day two of the two-day FTO refresher class in Union Gap, Washington

We were honored to be in Union Gap, Washington on April 12th and 13th, 2023, where we completed our two-Day FTO Refresher Class.

It was impressive to note the tenure of the attendees. Experience ranged from 5 to 20+ years of law enforcement. Several of the attendees have trained more than 15 student officers over their career. Even with their vast experience, the attendees all stated the course was an excellent review of the Adult Learning Modalities, utilization of the SEGs, and instruction of conducting a task analysis when evaluating the performance of the student officer.

Day one is a crash course (review) of the Basic FTO Class. Day two consists of reviewing the performance of a student officer, identifying the appropriate task element and documenting what remedial training efforts they would employ, with a focus on training towards success. The day concludes where each attendee is given a “days’ work” and completes a DOR on the performance of their student officer.

Attendees included members from the Zillah, Ferndale, College Place, Othello, and Union Gap Police Departments. Yakima County Sheriff and Washington State Patrol were also represented.

Thank you, Union Gap Police, especially Chief Cobb and Sgt Hector Rivera, for your hospitality and a great venue!

We are scheduled for two additional Refreshers Classes this year. We will be in Lynnwood, WA May 23rd and 24th, and WSU Pullman August 22nd and 23rd.

We have a Basic FTO Class in Everett, WA scheduled for September 25th – 29th. We are in the planning stages with the Ouachita Parish (Louisiana) Sheriff’s Office for a Basic Class sometime in October. You can view our current FTO training classes here.

As always, if you are looking to host a Refresher or Basic FTO Class with a focus on the San Jose Model, please send us an email.
